2015/16 Cleveland Police Precept Endorsed by Police & Crime Panel

PCC with Cleveland Police Officers

"My decision to increase the police precept by 1.99% takes into account my awareness of the financial hardship many local families face and allows the force to commence recruitment to ensure stability of police numbers for the foreseeable future."

Cleveland Police Commissioner Barry Coppinger’s call for a 1.99% rise in the police precept to help maintain officer numbers has been endorsed by the Police and Crime Panel.

The increase will add no more than a penny per day to  the bills of over 80% of households in the county and will ensure the force can commence recruitment of officers following a five year freeze.

Mr Coppinger said: "I have attended over 240 public meetings and feedback clearly indicates that the public value and support the work of the police and are willing to pay a bit extra if it helps maintain numbers on the streets.

"Cutbacks in government funding over recent years have been deep for Cleveland Police.   The 2015/16 budget has had to accommodate a reduction of £37m compared with 2011/12 and we have lost around 350 policing posts in that time as a result.

"My decision to increase the police precept by 1.99% takes into account my awareness of the financial hardship many local families face and allows the force to commence recruitment to ensure stability of police numbers for the foreseeable future."

The Cleveland Police and Crime Panel, which oversees the work of the Commissioner, voted in favour of the increase at their meeting last week.

The force’s financial plan was recently graded as "outstanding" by policing watchdog HMIC and Mr Coppinger said the small precept increase will ensure it can be implemented.
