Cleveland Special Constabulary Coordinate Operations for National Specials Weekend 2016

Specials Attestation Group 9.1.16

Special Constable Attestation in March 2016

Special Constables will coordinate two operations across Cleveland during National Specials Weekend 2016.

National Specials Weekend, organised to promote the work of Special Constables in local communities, will begin on Friday 3rd June to Sunday 5th June. It will see police forces deploying their Special Constables to undertake policing activities relevant to local needs.

The Special Constabulary is a force of trained volunteers who work with and support local police, with the same powers in law as regular police officers, including powers of arrest. 'Specials', as special constables are known, come from all walks of life - they are teachers, taxi drivers, accountants and secretaries, or any number of other careers - and they all volunteer a minimum of four hours a week to their local police force.

This weekend, Special Constables in Cleveland will coordinate Operation Impact, a specific operation targeting antisocial behaviour, and they will also lead on the arrest of those offenders wanted in connection with offences such as breach of bail, recall to prison and they will undertake curfew checks.

Police and Crime Commissioner for Cleveland, Barry Coppinger, said: “The work that our Special Constabulary carries out benefits the communities of Cleveland every week.

“Their contribution to policing, which is carried out in their own free time, is much valued and appreciated and forms an important part of policing in Cleveland.”

Superintendent John Lyons said: “Specials play an integral role in local policing and their roles can extend into more complex areas of policing. It is very humbling that Special Constables give up their free time to give something back to the communities of Cleveland.

“Our Special Constables are regularly involved in the activities that they will be taking up this weekend as part of their shifts and they will be coordinating those operations on behalf of Cleveland Police over the next few days.

“We deploy Special Constables wherever possible to compliment and offer valuable support to our regular officers and to provide a reassuring police presence to the residents of Cleveland.”

Cleveland Police’s Special Constabulary Chief Officer David Robinson said: “The Special Constabulary provides an invaluable service to the communities of Cleveland and can be an important link between members of the public and the Force.

“National Specials Weekend celebrates their important contribution to policing and provides an excellent opportunity for them to showcase their work throughout the country.

“This weekend our Special Constabulary will coordinate two operations around antisocial behaviour and the arrest of outstanding suspects for some specific offences.
