Cleveland’s Police and Crime Commissioner has welcomed the latest figures on crime in Cleveland.
Figures released by the Government’s Office of National Statistics (ONS) covering the year ending December 2024 show a decrease in Cleveland’s overall crime rate.
They also show decreases in key areas such as violence against the person and stalking – some of the crimes with the biggest potential to cause harm and ruin lives.
According to the ONS, the overall crime rate (excluding fraud,) has dropped from 79,356 during year ending December 2023 to 73,339 in the latest figures.
Cleveland PCC Matt Storey praised the work of officers and other local organisations, but stressed that there is still more to be done.
He said: “An overall reduction of eight per cent in the crime rate within a year is a significant achievement
“It’s testament to the hard work and dedication of Cleveland Police and its partners.
“One of the key objectives in my Police and Crime Plan is to reduce crime, antisocial behaviour and harm to build safe, strong and confident communities.
“A reduction of 6,017 crimes means 6,000-plus less victims during the year. There’s also the knock-on effect of a reduction in the fear of crime within our communities.
“However, I am still conscious that we have much more work to do and I am confident we can continue to reduce crime with hard work, dedication and sustained partnership working.”
Among the categories of crime to see a downturn during year ending December 2024 are:
- Stalking and harassment – down 21 per cent
- Public order – down 18 per cent
- Burglary – down 17 per cent
- Vehicle offences – down 14 per cent
- Violence against person – down 10 per cent
- Theft – down seven per cent
- Criminal damage and arson – down five per cent
