Possession of zombie-style knives and machetes has become a criminal offence in the UK.
From today, Tuesday, September 24, 2024, zombie-style knives and machetes have been added to the list of dangerous prohibited items already banned, including zombie knives, butterfly knives, Samurai swords and push daggers.
Under new rules, those found in unlawful possession of a zombie-style knife or a machete could now face a sentence of up to two years in prison.
It comes after the Government launched a month-long surrender scheme. That allowed people to hand in weapons in safely and legally, in return for an application for compensation.
The scheme ran for four weeks from 26 August to 23 September. There weren’t repercussions for surrendering potentially dangerous knives safely to police stations.
Life-changing
Police and Crime Commissioner for Cleveland, Matt Storey, said: “It’s welcoming news for communities across Cleveland that zombie-style knives and machetes are now on the list of dangerous prohibited items.
“I have seen first-hand the devastating and life-changing consequences weapons of this kind have; they are dangerous, they should not be on our streets and I do not want residents to have them.
“As PCC, I understand this clamp down will only be successful with a strong multi-agency approach.
“I am committed to ensuring supply of these lethal weapons is stopped at the source, education is in our schools spelling out the harm they cause, and Cleveland Police has the resources it needs to enforce the law to help bring the knife crime epidemic to an end.”
