Residents of two Cleveland communities disproportionately affected by burglary are being given the chance to influence how £1m of crime prevention measures will be installed in their neighbourhoods.
People living in South Bank in Redcar and Cleveland and Burn Valley in Hartlepool are being asked to complete a short survey asking what measures they think the police and community safety partners should take to make their area safer.
The results of the survey will help the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner (OPCC) work with local councils to install measures such as CCTV, better street lighting and improvements to existing alley gates.
Working with partners, the Commissioner’s Office secured over £1m from the Home Office’s Safer Streets Fund to protect three Cleveland neighbourhoods most vulnerable to theft and burglary-related crime.
South Bank will have £110,250 to spend on the new measures, with Burn Valley and the Newport area of Middlesbrough allocated £444,608 and £479,838 respectively.
Consultation with residents in the Newport area has already taken place and installation of CCTV is underway.
Acting Police and Crime Commissioner for Cleveland, Lisa Oldroyd, said: “No one should have to live in constant fear of being targeted by opportunistic thieves and while the police will continue their work to catch these prolific perpetrators, we have a fantastic opportunity to help protect residents.
“People living in South Bank and Burn Valley have invaluable local knowledge that will help us place these additional measures in the right places to prevent further victimisation and catch offenders.
“This project has been a real partnership effort between the Commissioner’s Office and our colleagues in local councils and it’s exciting to see these measures starting to be installed in our most at-risk communities.”
