An experienced retail manager has been selected as co-chair of a new retail crime partnership established by Cleveland’s Police and Crime Commissioner.
Andrea Thornborrow is manager of Primark’s Middlesbrough branch. From September, she’ll be the voice of retail workers on Cleveland’s Retail Crime Forum.
Andrea has extensive experience in the retail sector, having worked for Primark for almost 30 years.
A Middlesbrough native, she will work alongside PCC Matt Storey to look at a range of challenges facing retailers. The forum will also explore how business and public bodies can work together to overcome them.
Andrea said: “I’m delighted to contribute to this newly established forum, which seeks to reduce the impact of crime and antisocial behaviour on retailers.
“It’s important that shop workers have a seat at the table when solutions for tackling retail crime are developed, to ensure our voices and experiences are heard.
“Sadly too many of us are experiencing daily issues with shoplifting, antisocial behaviour and abuse towards retail staff.
“I hope my role in this forum will encourage more businesses to participate, to consider new innovations and call for the support we need.”
The forum meets quarterly and is endorsed by the North-East Chamber of Commerce.
Members discuss the emotional, operational, and financial impact of crime. They also discuss concerns about police capacity, perceptions that deterrents are ineffective and that employers often do not provide enough staff support.
Stronger action
They have called for stronger action, better protection measures and more coordinated responses to retail crime.
The forum is made up of members drawn from business, the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner, Cleveland Police and the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS.) Probation, local authorities and business representatives also participate.
PCC Matt Storey said: “It’s fantastic to have someone as experienced, knowledgeable and passionate as Andrea involved in the Retail Crime Forum.
“Whilst the police and criminal justice system must work effectively to bring perpetrators to justice, we must also work collaboratively with retailers make stores safer for all.
“Having a trusted voice like Andrea’s around the table helps to bring credibility and experience to this work and will hopefully encourage others to get involved.”
The forum is looking for more business members who want to make their voices heard.
