Students at Middlesbrough College got to hear from the man responsible for policing and community safety services in the region.
Cleveland Police and Crime Commissioner Matt Storey visited the campus. He met and talked with students on the college’s Uniformed Protective Services course.
The two-year programme takes students through all aspects of serving in uniformed public services such as the police and fire brigade. It’s a mix of classroom study and outdoor practical sport and fitness activities.
After completing the course, students can progress on to higher education or embark on a career in public service.
Matt talked to students about how he came to become Police & Crime Commissioner in May 2024.
He also told them what the role involves and how it links the police with other agencies and the public.
A vital career
He said: “The college’s uniformed students are the potential police – and police staff – of the future.
“It’s important, therefore, that students get the best education and support around careers in the uniformed services as possible.
“These careers are rewarding and vital to the smooth – and safe – running of our society. However, they are also dangerous and demanding. It’s important that students know the facts and make the right choice.
“I’m delighted to be able to tell the students a little more about my role, I hope this will promote greater understanding of how policing works in this country – and who knows, one of the students be inspired to become the Police and Crime Commissioner for Cleveland in future!”
Paul Welsh, Course Team Leader Public Services at Middlesbrough College, said: “We really appreciate Matt Storey taking time out of his busy schedule to come and talk to our students.
“It was invaluable for them to gain a first-hand insight into how the role of the Police and Crime Commissioner works in practice and how that relates to the day to day running of the police service.”
