Crimestoppers is an independent national charity which gives the public the opportunity to give anonymous information in relation to crime, which is then shared with the police to facilitate investigations.
Within Cleveland a new Regional Engagement lead was appointed by Crimestoppers to develop engagement with north east police forces and this has seen a large reduction in positive use of Crimestoppers data and functions by Cleveland Police.
During the first 3 quarters of 2020/21, 1614 reports were disseminated to Cleveland Police, resulting in 60 positive outcomes with 47 perpetrators arrested and charged. Of particular note is an increase in the use of Crimestoppers enhanced rewards in relation to specific cases – this function has only recently been utilised by Cleveland Police, with 3 enhanced rewards offered this financial year.
Community engagement in Cleveland has shown that many people, particularly those in high crime areas, feel nervous about reporting directly to the police for fear of recrimination. Crimestoppers provides an alternative avenue for people to report crime and has been shown to demonstrate a clear link to positive outcomes.
