National Ugly Mugs (NUM) is a national organisation which provides greater access to justice and protection for sex workers.
Sex workers are often targeted by dangerous individuals but frequently reluctant to report incidents to the police.
Offenders are often serial sex predators who pose a huge risk to the public as a whole.
Funding from the Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) enables NUM to work in partnership with local support services. They make sure men and women working on the streets are safe.
In addition, it also enables contact with people who use online methods of communication.
In Cleveland, specialist service providers raise awareness and promote NUM.
Sex workers are encouraged to make use of this system if they become victims of violence.
The sharing this information is vital in terms of individual safety and the wider intelligence it produces.
The PCC has contributed to the NUM Scheme for a number of years. It supports the Police and Crime Plan priorities of A Better Deal for Victims and Working Together to Make Cleveland Safer.
