Domestic abuse services
The Police and Crime Commissioner commissions – or grant funds – a number of services across Cleveland for victims of domestic abuse.
Services are provided by the following:
- My Sister’s Place;
- Harbour Support Services;
- The Halo Project;
- Eva.
They offer a range of services to men, women and/or children escaping domestic and/or cultural-based harm throughout Cleveland.
My Sister’s Place
Middlesbrough-based My Sister’s Place’ is a specialist domestic violence service.
It provides support services to women, aged 16-plus, who are suffering – or have suffered – domestic abuse. In addition, it works with some domestic violence offenders.
The charity is an independent service working in partnership with a range of agencies.
It aims to ensure victims can access relevant support and protection. Its purpose is to make women and children safe.
Services include the following:
- Counselling and therapeutic services;
- Six-week Freedom and Choices programmes;
- Stepping Stones Women’s Group;
- Independent Domestic Violence Advocate (IDVA;)
- Advice on money and housing;
- Specialist support tailored to the BAME, veterans and LGBTQ-Plus communities.

Harbour Support Services
Harbour offers a range of services to both victims and perpetrators of domestic violence.
The charity provides advice, guidance and practical assistance to both women and men affected by abusive relationships.
Services are offered across the north east including in Hartlepool, Stockton, Middlesbrough, Redcar & Cleveland, County Durham, Darlington, Northumberland and North Tyneside.
Services include the following:
- Outreach support;
- Support for children and young people;
- Training for service providers working with the public to enable them to help those affected by domestic abuse.

The Halo Project
The Halo Project supports victims of honour-based violence, forced marriage and female genital mutilation (FGM.)
The charity provides advice and support to victims. It also works with key partners to secure the safety and protection of victims.
In addition, the Halo Project provides emotional and practical support to victims, who have been through, or may go through, forced marriage.
It also aims to educate the community on issues around forced marriage and works closely with Cleveland Police. In addition, Halo makes and maintains links with agencies and organisations, which provide services to victims.

Eva Women’s Aid
EVA Women’s Aid was established in 1987 to support women and children in Redcar and Cleveland fleeing domestic abuse and sexual violence.
Therefore, its aim is to provide a range of free, confidential and non-judgemental specialist support services.
Services are designed for women and children who have, at some point, been affected by domestic abuse and/or sexual violence.

The Government has also published useful advice online for anyone suffering domestic abuse.
Domestic Abuse Protection Orders (DAPO)
Cleveland is one of the first places in England and Wales, where victims can apply for a Domestic Abuse Protection Order (DAPO.)
A DAPO can:
- Order some-one to wear an electronic tag to check that they’re keeping to the conditions of the order;
- Stop someone coming to – or near – your home;
- Decide who can stay – or return – to your home;
- Order some-one to attend a behavioural change programme.
There are no court fees to apply for a DAPO.
