THE Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner (OPCC) for Cleveland is looking for public-spirited people to help with the business of policing.
As part of national financial regulations, the PCC and Chief Constable must set up an Independent Audit Committee.
The committee scrutinises both organisations and makes sure they are run properly.
As a result, volunteer committee members play a key role in increasing public trust and confidence in how the OPCC and Cleveland Police are run.
Members also assist the PCC to carry out his statutory responsibility in holding Cleveland Police to account
The committee meets at least four times per year. They consider internal and external audit reports.
Members advise the PCC and Chief Constable according to the principles of good governance. They also guide them to adopt appropriate risk management arrangements in line with proper practices.
Senior management of the OPCC and Cleveland Police attend every committee meeting.
The Audit Committee is made up of five members including a Chair and Vice Chair. All members of the committee are independent of the OPCC and Cleveland Police. In addition, they cannot be members of Cleveland Police and Crime Panel or employed by the force or its partner organisations.
The roles of Chair and Vice Chair will become vacant later this year after the current postholders complete their maximum, two-term appointment period.
The PCC and Chief Constable want to appoint a Chair to cover the next four years. They want to appoint two Members, one of which could be appointed as Vice Chair, on terms of between two and four years.
Successful applicants will demonstrate experience and knowledge of corporate governance.
The Chair and Vice Chair will need proven experience in chairing meetings, preferably in the field of corporate governance, audit or finance.
Steve Turner, PCC for Cleveland, said: “In advance of the roles of Chair and Vice Chair becoming available, we would like to appoint to both posts.
“This will give the new role holders an opportunity for a handover/familiarisation period.
“The final meeting for the current Chair and Vice Chair is scheduled to take place at the Community Safety Hub, Middlesbrough, on Thursday 30 September at 10.30am.
“It is a public meeting and an ideal opportunity for anyone interested in becoming a member of the Audit Committee to see how it works and what topics it discusses at a typical meeting.”
Applicants interested in attending the meeting, should email the OPCC in advance. This is to ensure that they are aware of any changes to location, date and/or method of the meeting prior to 30 September 2021.
Anyone interested in volunteering for the committee should submit their CV with a letter outlining any relevant skills and experience. They should also indicate whether they wish to be considered for the Chair and/or Vice Chair roles.
