At the start of 2019-20, the panel held a public confirmation hearing in respect of the Commissioner’s proposal to appoint a new Chief Constable.
The selection of Richard Lewis for this role has given the panel cause for optimism as the force continues to confront a number of historical, organisational challenges.
The extent of these challenges were highlighted in September 2019 when HMICFRS published its integrated PEEL assessment report.
The report gave an extremely disappointing verdict on Cleveland Police. It demonstrated failings across the three main pillars of inspection.
Improving police performance – as well as how the force is perceived – is crucial to all stakeholders. The panel will ensure it plays its part in raising standards across the board.
