The Independent Custody Visitors Association has produced a guide to Police and Crime Commissioner’s (PCC) duty to run an independent custody visiting scheme.
The guide is aimed at candidates running in the PCC elections in May 2021.
Every PCC has a statutory duty to run an independent custody visiting scheme.
The scheme sees members of the public volunteer to serve as Independent Custody Visitors (ICVs.)
They make regular, unannounced visits to police custody to check on the rights, entitlements and wellbeing of detainees as well as the conditions, in which they are held.
