The objectives of the Haswell Allotment Association are:
- To work with the Local Authority and other agencies to improve the site at Haswell Avenue, Hartlepool.
- To help plot holders learn about and practice good horticultural techniques. Also it aims to foster good social relationships between plot holders and with the local community. The health, knowledge and education of plot holders is enhanced as a result. The appearance of the site is also improved.
- To work with and assist school pupils and teachers in the cultivation of thier dedicated plot on the site and teach the pupils good horticultural practices and explain the benfits of organic home grown fruit and vegetables.
- To also assist with the newly constructed environmental pond on the site specifcally used by the school pupils to study wildlife and biodiversity in the recently aquired pond dipping cabin.
Over the past few years, the site has had numerous break-ins, thefts and vandalism. These have included a serious arson attack in 2014. This resulted in several sheds and greenhouses being destroyed, leaving elderly plot holders devastated.
The Security initiative includes putting up and maintaining sensor security lights and cameras within the site. This will deter anti-social behaviour.
It will also protect the interests of the school plot, cabin, pond and their own secure storage container, where garden machinery is kept overnight.
