Chief Constable Cheer has given notice of her intention to retire from the police service.
Her last day of service will be 12 January 2016. Her last day in the office will be 6 January 2016.
The Police & Crime Commissioner has already approved the retirement.
He has determined that the appointment of a substantive Chief Constable should wait until the completion of the forthcoming Police & Crime Commissioner elections.
By virtue of s41 Police Reform & Social Responsibility Act 2011, the role of Acting Chief Constable is adopted by the Deputy Chief Constable.
This is in the event of either or both of an absence or a vacancy in the substantive office of Chief Constable. In line with precedent, the Police & Crime Commissioner is invited to determine that:
- During the absence and subsequent vacancy in the office of Chief Constable, Deputy Chief Constable Iain Spittal will assume the role of Acting Chief Constable.
- These arrangements will start on 7 January 2016 for as long as the vacancy exists.
